The family wanted to reclaim part of their garage from exercise equipment while giving two teenage children somewhere to relax with friends. Rather than build two separate structures, they asked for a flexible room that could comfortably support both activities. The space needed a durable floor zone for gym equipment, softer seating at the opposite end and enough glazing to avoid the feel of an enclosed outbuilding. The parents were clear that the building should improve the garden rather than simply consume part of it.
The Design Challenge
The main design challenge was accommodating very different uses in one room. Exercise creates heat and requires ventilation, while a lounge benefits from warmth, softer lighting and a calmer atmosphere. The footprint also needed to leave enough lawn for everyday family use.

The Finished Result
