A hot tub makes for a luxurious addition to any home, where it provides space to relax and soothe your muscles at the end of a long day. Once a rarity in domestic spaces, hot tubs have become more readily available in recent years, where they are now a common feature in suburban gardens and outdoor spaces.
Importantly however, hot tubs have to be properly maintained to prevent harmful bacteria build-up. There are several regular cleaning and maintenance methods that you should have a good grasp of as a hot tub owner, where these are quick to carry out but can have a big impact.

The pH scale describes whether your water is acidic or alkaline, where 1 is the most acidic, and 7 is neutral. Your ideal pH for your hot tub is between 7.2 and 7.8, where this can be checked using a test strip, and then adjusted using specialist chemicals.
As bacteria multiplies in a hot climate, it is necessary to use sanitisers to keep your hot tub clean. You can utilise chlorine granules or tablets, or alternatively bromine tablets, which can have a less harsh smell than chlorine alternatives. A test strip can let you know if you have the correct quantity of sanitisers in your water, measured in parts per million (PPM).
It is also necessary to shock or oxidise your hot tub water every week with a non-chlorine solution. This breaks down chloramines which are formed through a chemical reaction between the sanitiser and pollutants in the water. Shock treatments will also kill further bacteria and remove organic compounds from the tub.
A hot tub filter skims the top of the water through a filter box, where cartridges clean out surface dirt and debris. These filters need to be changed fortnightly, where clogged cartridges can disrupt the flow of your hot tub and cause it to shut down.
Even with regular cleaning and maintenance, you will still need to change your hot tub water every three to four months. A draining pipe can be used to remove the water, where the tub surface should be properly cleaned before it is refilled. You can also enlist a professional service to change your water for you.
